Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya

FUndació Antoni Tàpies

Organized jointly by the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (National Art Museum of Catalonia) and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies (Antoni Tàpies Foundation), and curated by Vicent Todolí, "Tàpies. From Within" will present a hundred works from the artist’s studio and the collection of the Fundació Antoni Tàpies.

This comprehensive retrospective exhibition spans from the first paintings in the 1940s, influenced by different avant-garde trends and his subsequent participation in the Dau al Set group, to the works made only a few months before his death in 2011.

Thanks to the collaboration of the Tàpies family, this exhibition will enable visitors to learn in depth about the legacy of the painter’s studio and discover works that have been hitherto invisible or in some cases even unpublished.

From his first works, Tàpies began an aesthetic search based on experimentation with materials and shapes, which would give rise in the 1950s to his material paintings, awarding him international acknowledgement. At that time he had hope in an art that impacts and disturbs the spectator. From that time until his death, Tàpies continued experimenting indefatigably, even obsessively, developing his own iconography, his own vocabulary made of signs, materials, colours and unrecognisable objects.

In its presentation in Barcelona, the exhibition will have two locations, Fundació Antoni Tàpies and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. It will later travel to different international museums.
